Current Site and App of the Week - eSchool News August 6, 2014

Current Site of the Week

"Bring gaming into your classroom with our latest Site of the Week." writes eSchool News.

Classcraft is a free online educational role-playing game that teachers and students play together in the classroom. Acting as a gamification layer around any existing curriculum, the game transforms the way a class is experienced, throughout the school year. Explore the different sections below to get a better understand of how Classcraft works.

Classcraft takes less than an hour to set up and only requires a laptop and projector. Students play in teams as mages, warriors, and healers, each with unique powers. The more a student excels in class, not only academically but also in supporting classmates’ learning, the more he or she gains points and obtains real powers like bringing notes to an exam. Conversely, teams lose points by showing up late to class, disrupting the class or turning in incomplete homework assignments and players suffer real consequences like detention and less time to finish assignments.

Classcraft founder and high school physics teacher Shawn Young tapped his unique background in education, gamification, and web development to create an online role-playing game that teachers and students can play together in the classroom. Young joined forces with his father, 35-year business veteran Lauren Young, and brother Devin Young, a creative director with an extensive background in design, branding, social media, and developing and producing websites and web apps. The site has three pricing modes, including a free mode, for the 2014-2015 school year.
