Among children aged between five and 15, 34 per cent now have their own tablet rather than using devices belonging to their parents or school, up from 19 per cent in 2013, according to new research by the communications regulator Ofcom.
Overall, 62 per cent of children surveyed said they use a tablet at home, up from 42 per cent in 2013.

Ofcom noted a sharp increase in tablet ownership among very young children, with 11 per cent of children aged three to four now having their own tablet, up from 3 per cent in 2013.
This means that some children are learning to surf the web, play games and watch video clips before they join school.

Meanwhile, the proportion of children accessing the internet on a PC, laptop or netbook fell by 3 percent year-on-year to 88 per cent. Ofcom said this could have implications for future use of laptops and PCs.

The number of children with a TV set or games console in their bedroom also declined over the past year, while proportion of children watching TV and playing games on a tablet has risen.
