Author Simon Singh popped into Reigate Grammar School to reveal the secrets behind the hit TV show.

Pupils were impressed as Mr Singh discussed the maths puzzles and jokes imbedded in the cartoon which have previously slipped under their noses. From binary numbers and equations to cutting-edge theorems, Mr Singh explained how the writers, with their well-trained mathematical minds, layer the show's more obvious jokes with a deeper appeal to fellow mathematicians.

Arabella Crook, the school's head of maths, said: "This was a brilliant session with our senior mathematicians discovering more about their favourite subjects in one of their favourite shows.

"Simon also gave us a whistle-stop tour of cosmology, the history of the Big Bang theory and notable mathematicians from history."
