A Doctorate, when distance learning is the only option

Amanda Cox believes that users should not have to bear responsibility for their own privacy protection when using social media. So she's studying for her Doctorate at Charles Sturt University into privacy mechanisms within social media, including the ethical use of social media; risks entailed with the implementation and use of social media, businesses' use of social media and the effect of social media on policymaking at an international level.

Social media, she says, has the ability to blur the lines between personal and professional lives. "This phenomenon - and the technology that supports it - is still in its infancy and is evolving at rapid pace. It appears that the creators of these applications have failed to address some of concerns that have been generated by such rapid evolution."

These concerns need to be addressed, she says. "Private companies like Facebook need more oversight, due to unprecedented quantities of sensitive personal data stored."

Amanda is undertaking CSU’s Doctor of Information Technology course, which is offered only by distance education and which is designed to give students maximum flexibility in their study schedule. They complete the coursework component in part-time mode and then can choose from full-time and part-time study options for the thesis component.

The exclusively distance learning nature of the course is crucial for Amanda who says she was "born with so many conflicting disabilities but that has never stopped me from learning or wanting to learn."

Travelling and studying on a university campus was never an option for Amanda, but she discovered Charles Sturt University's online IT Master’s degree course and signed up in 2004. Having graduated from that she has how set her sights on a Doctorate.

When she graduated she was unable to travel to Bathurst for graduation ceremony so the Head of CSU’s School of Computing and Mathematics, Associate Professor Irfan Altas, organised a flight to her home in Townsville to congratulate her in person, along with CSU adjunct senior lecturer in IT, Martin Hale...
