Orchestra opens doors for aspiring musicians

"There have long been critics of the summer learning loss. Studies have found children are less focused, they often forget lessons learned during the school year and forgo hours of practicing for other heat-induced activities in the summer." continues Beloit Daily News.

Four years ago, a group of music lovers thought it was time to change that, forming the Turtle Creek Chamber Orchestra.

The summer orchestra, which hosts a four-day, Summer Music Mini-camp to promote music education, now has one very special opportunity for the youth in the Beloit area.

The orchestra just received a $2,980 Creative Communities grant from the Wisconsin Art Board.

The funds will be used to run the four-day music camp for young musicians, which hosts around 50 students each summer. Instructors from around the area are paid a small stipend to teach the students, who put on a music showcase at the end of the program.

But it isn’t just music that students are learning — it’s life lessons.

“We teach teamwork, how to work well together,” said Treasurer Carol Roy. (These) things that aren’t an exact science.”

Roy and husband, Greg, along with Dr. J. Ian Nie, an accomplished music professor at Beloit College, are the founders of the orchestra, meeting in 2012 to discuss the idea and launching it later that year. The three are joined by several music teachers from as far away as Milwaukee to host the camp each year.

Now the three hope to expand. The orchestra has been invited to perform in Europe in June of 2017. They hope to invite winners from their young artist competition to join the orchestra while they’re overseas.

The orchestra will hold its annual fundraiser at The Castle, 501 Prospect St., at 6 p.m. on Aug. 22. There will be hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, and a silent auction. There is a $10 donation.
