Students at Perrysburg Junior High School already have an idea of what it’s like to develop mobile apps, create computer graphics and animations, and even fly a plane.

They’ve built solar-powered cars and printed 3-D ones, and developed a solar-powered hot-dog cooker. All of these skills they learned in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics lab.

The lab and STEM program were added this school year after teachers and Perrysburg Schools officials recognized the need for more STEM-related opportunities.

“At the junior high, there was a real need to engage students in project and active learning, and we felt this was a neat way to do that,” Superintendent Tom Hosler said. “Jobs of the 21st century apply that interdisciplinary approach. Pulling all those areas together — math, science, technology, and engineering — replicates what they’ll be learning in college and in the workplace.”

STEM education uses hands-on and experience-based learning in science, technology, engineering, and math. Modules used in class inspire students to think critically and solve problems. The curriculum transfers into other learning subjects.
