How to Enhance Your Online Learning Experience

Today I have Shannon Wills guest blogging. Please be sure to check out her unique guest post. Guest posts are always welcome, please contact me.

There’s no doubting the fact that online education is a boon to most of us who are constrained by time, money and space. Today, thanks to the advances in technology and the widespread popularity of the Internet, we can earn almost any degree from the comfort of our homes. Normally, all you would need for success is a computer, an Internet connection and discipline. But with technology being what it is today, here’s how you can enhance your online learning experience and make it more fulfilling.

Get tech savvy:
You don’t have to tie yourself to a computer in order to study or download your lessons; you can do this just as efficiently with a variety of gadgets like the iPhone and other smartphones that connect to the Internet and let you learn on the go. You don’t have to lug around a heavy notebook computer either because you can put your notes on your e-Reader and study wherever you are without having to hurry back home so that you can get your assignments done. And if your memory is not what it used to be, your gadgets remember appointments and schedules for you when you’re balancing work, family and studies all at once.

Learn to multitask:
I know we’ve all be taught as kids to finish one task first before we move on to the next one, but when you live life in the fast lane, you have to be able to multitask efficiently. Some tasks are easily achieved even when combined with others – you can do laundry while you study and exercise while listening to a tape of a lesson; you could combine research for work and your degree if the subjects overlap; and you could make your phone calls while you cook or clean the house. It’s up to you to decide how to assign your tasks so that you do all of them well and without mistakes.

Do more:
When it comes to online education, you need to go the extra mile to ensure that you are taken seriously by potential employers. So if you don’t have a job at present, try and secure one (even part time employment is good) in the field you’re majoring in. Do more than what your coursework demands because the more you learn, the more you’re able to impress employers. If you’re studying computer science, keep up to date with all the innovations that are taking place in this field instead of sticking to your curriculum alone. In short, you must do more to achieve success when you study online.

What Technology Will Bring to the Next Decade

Look back at how far computers and other personal technologies have come in the last 10 years, and it's easy to see why it's so difficult to predict where they'll go over the next decade.
Best guess: Look for more data to be available at any time, more information accessible through speedier devices, a greater reliance on the cloud, and technologies that work away quietly in the background.

Photo: Dreamstime

Ten years ago, we would have been blown away by a cellphone with far more computing power and memory than the average PC had in 1999, along with a built-in camera and programs to manage every aspect of our lives. Ten years from now, the iPhone and its ilk will be antiques.
Over the next decade, the evolution of computing and the Internet will produce faster, increasingly intelligent devices. More of our possessions will contain sensors and computers that log our activities, building digital dossiers that augment our memories, help us make decisions and tame information overload.

In online education, Hartland teacher in a class all her own by Frank Konkel

During the 2009-2010 school year, Laber, a Hartland Middle School at Ore Creek math teacher, teaches six seventh-grade classes.
Because of her full load, Laber doesn’t even have a prep hour, but teaching middle school math is only part of her work day.

The rest of her time she spends teaching trigonometry and geometry to students across the state online through Michigan Virtual School.
For her efforts, Laber was recognized this month as Michigan Virtual School’s 2009 Online Teacher of the Year. She accepted the award two weeks ago at a ceremony in Lansing.

“You’re seeing now, with the Michigan Merit Curriculum, that every student has to have an online experience, and I believe that’s how the future is going to be,” Laber said. “I’m interested in a blended approach between face-to-face teaching and online learning.”

Teaching avatars

James Cameron's latest release Avatar has made online virtual worlds such as Second Life (SL) more popular than ever as audiences sit up and take notice of the possibilities of these sites.

Image Credit: Luis Vazquez, Gulf News

Users are currently using these sites to socialise and connect using free voice and text chat through personalised avatars or computerised self-representations.
However, these sites also hold out the possibility to become places where educators are discovering academic possibilities.
SL, for example, provides virtual homes for some of the world's most prestigious universities such as Harvard and Stanford who have bought virtual land with Linden Dollars.

New research on gaming design and brain plasticity offers more perspectives on educational gaming
By Meris Stansbury, Associate Editor

According to a recent paper by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), games, when developed correctly and used appropriately, can engage players in learning that is specifically applicable to school curriculum—and teachers can leverage the learning in these games without disrupting the worlds of either "play" or school.

A report from the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, "Game Changer: Investing in digital play to advance children's learning and health," claims that on an average day, children as young as eight spend as many hours engaged in media activity as they spend in school. Seventy-five percent of American children play computer and video games, it says.
The report, said Michael Levine, executive director of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, aims to help answer the question: "Can digital games, especially well-designed education games, help reshape our nation's approach to learning and growing?"

NSF's "Science Nation" aims to bring science to the masses

"Science Nation" is a free, weekly online magazine from the National Science Foundation that looks at discoveries with the potential to transform our world -- such as an artificial retina that can help the blind to see, new materials for building things stronger and lighter, what we're learning from organisms in hot volcanic vents, and ice core secrets that could reveal the answers to global warming. "Each week, 'Science Nation' takes a dynamic, entertaining look at the research -- and the researchers -- that will change our lives," the site proclaims.

Solar Cell Phone Charger

Today I have Valery Bowen guest blogging. Please be sure to check out her unique guest post.
Guest posts are always welcome, please contact me.

How does the solar cell phone charger work?

Simply put a solar cell phone charger works by converting the sun's energy into use for a cell phone battery. The charger stores the sun's energy inits internal battery for later use. The cell phone is plugged into the solar charger in the same manner as an electrical charger.

How much energy could I save each year using a solar cell phone charger?
By using a solar cell phone charger, electricity is saved. A normal cellphone charge using electricity will use approximately 2 watts of electricity per day. This translates into roughly 730 watts or one kilowatt of electricity per year. Many households have several cellphones, so the electrical savings adds up even more.

How much time does it take for a solar cell phone charger to charge a phone?
The amount of time a solar cell phone charger takes to charge a cell phone depends on the wattage of the charger. The formula for estimating total charge time in direct sunlight is amperes per hour of the battery dividedby the amperes per hour of the charger plus ten percent.
Using this formula a 2 watt solar phone charger with direct sunlight will fully charge a cell phone in approximately three hours. An 18 watt charger with direct sunlight will fully charge a cell phone in about 30 minutes. A good portable device will produce anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes of talktime with one hour of charge.

What are the best solar phone chargers?
There are several good solar cell phone chargers on the market today. Solio Universal Charger has made several top ratings. It is compact, gives 20 minute call time in an hour and is portable. Some other well-recommended solar chargers, both large and small, are isun, Global Solar Sunlinq and Powermonkey Explorer Solar Emergency Charger.
Because all solar chargers are not compatible with all phones, a careful check should be made to insure that the phone and charger will work together before any solar cell phone charger is purchased.

How much waste is produced by manufacturers who produce those "green"solar chargers?
There is a big environmental controversy surrounding the manufacture of solar charger. Solar panels are manufactured with silicon and other toxic chemicals.
A wake up call has been sent out to these manufactures and steps to correct this problem are being taken.
