The University of Central Oklahoma is clicking its way into the newest form of technology in the classrooms. This hand held device is called the test-taking clicker. It is a registered apparatus allowing the student and professors to connect at the click of a button.
"Students use clickers which register responses immediately, making it easier for professors to teach large classes," said James Bidlack, biology professor at UCO. The clicker can also take attendance and measure the understanding of the lectures, through the student's responses using this student-operated remote control.

Synchronous Chat and Electronic Ink for Distance Support in Mathematics

Just look at this article.
Birgit Loch and Christine McDonald provide the results of a pilot study that explored how a free and widely available chat client (MSN Messenger) could serve as a viable medium for distance learning tutorials in mathematics.
By providing its users with an easy way to incorporate diagrams, symbols, and specialized mathematical annotations in their communications, this popular chat client offers a convenient alternative to the whiteboard function of Blackboard and other proprietary systems.

REDUCING THE EFFECTS OF ISOLATION AND PROMOTING INCLUSIVITY FOR DISTANCE LEARNERS THROUGH PODCASTING

DISTANCE EDUCATION:
A LONELY AND ISOLATING EXPERIENCE?
Article by Mark J. W. LEE and Anthony CHAN. Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education Vol. 8 No. 1, Article: 7, January 2007.
At most higher education institutions, distance learners have the highest risk of dropping out of their programmes of study (Peters, 1992). This can be attributed in large part to the isolation experienced by these students (Rogers, 1990; Peters, 1992; Okun, Benin & Brandt-Williams 1996; Hipp, 1997; Lake, 1999; Delahoussaye & Zemke, 2001).
Students of all kinds want to have a sense of belonging to a larger university community, rather than simply being an enrolee, or worse still, a statistic, in a course. For many on-campus students, their involvement in the campus community forms an important part of their social lives and plays an integral role in their personal and academic development.

Assessing Group Interactions On-line: Students' Perspectives
Article by Dr. Catherine Caws. The Journal of Learning Design (JLD) Vol. 1 No. 3, 19-28.
Abstract
The purpose of the following article is to discuss the integration of computer mediated communication into a French writing course and to report on the assessment methodology used in order to gather students' perspectives.
The purpose of the following article is to discuss the integration of computer mediated communication into a French writing course and to report on the assessment methodology used in order to gather students' perspectives.
The online course component was introduced in the Fall of 2003 in order to enhance students' learning by introducing collaborative writing projects, and as a result, to encourage them to write on a regular basis. The intent of the new pedagogical paradigm was to create a student-centred environment where socio-constructivist and cognitive principles would be infused into the teaching of French writing (L2 setting).
A design experiment methodology based on students' perspectives was used to continuously test and refine the online component of the course. This process assessment helped in the development of our final course model and tested the quality of our teaching.
