New and Changing Teacher Roles in Higher Education in a Digital Age



Just to let you know that this article appears in Vol. 10, Issue 1, 2007 edition of The Journal of Educational Technology & Society.


ABSTRACT:
Digital tools are increasingly being used to support teaching in higher education. These tools place new demands on the tasks and responsibilities of the teacher, and can influence teacher roles. In this study we investigate the long-term use and development of a tool for facilitating the negotiation of meaning in argumentative student texts, through teacher and peer feedback. From this setting new teacher roles have emerged.

University of Copenhagen chooses it's learning as their new learning platform.

University of Copenhagen, the biggest nordic university with 50.000 users, chooses it's learning as their new learning platform.




Mere end 50.000 undervisere og studerende på Københavns Universitet vil fremover udveksle viden og information via det norske e-læringsmiljø it's learning. Med systemet får alle adgang til et fælles miljø, hvor de fra pc'er eller mobiltelefoner kan følge med i de aktiviteter, der er planlagt i undervisningen. De studerende kan hente materialer, aflevere rapporter, gå ind i "blogs" og præsentere arbejdet i en såkaldt portfolio, der kan lægges ud på internet.

Temple Captures Classroom Lectures

The Fox School of Business at Temple University has created what it calls the nation's first large-scale, automated "academic capture system." The TUCAPTURE system automatically records every minute of audio, visuals, even handwriting from every meeting of selected courses, for immediate webcast and podcast.

According to Robert Craven, education technology coordinator for the Orange County Department of Education in California, iPods offer astounding possibilities for education. Administrators can record meetings, administer professional development activities, and keep contact information for every student and faculty member in the district.

A Wireless World: Charles County Public Schools Makes Wireless Universal by Richard Hoffman


Wireless connectivity in schools is all the rage, and many school systems have at least gotten their feet wet with a wireless lab or a few portable laptop carts.
But Bijaya Devkota, the chief information officer of Charles County Public Schools, in La Plata, Md., has done what many school systems only dream of—implemented universal wireless access throughout his district, including data and voice services.
Mr. Devkota shared some of his district’s experiences in rolling out universal wireless, and the lessons and best practices learned throughout the process, as well as thoughts on the benefits of implementing wireless capability.
