Those who are inexperienced with online learning often guess it means only one thing: a student sits alone at a computer interacting with a digitized textbook at his own rate, taking online quizzes and emailing assignments or questions to a course facilitator.

This is primarily what current virtual schools are offering, but it's only one model of online learningProfessional education associations such as the International Association for K-12 Online Learning and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills have developed a robust framework for blended and online learning to address the new educational needs that have emerged recently because of the electronic revolution.
