Can machine learning prevent another WannaCry? | Livemint

WannaCry, the malware that held over 200,000 individuals across 10,000 organizations in nearly 100 countries to ransom—demanding that they either cough up money or lose their data—may be on the wane but this is no time to be complacent.

While hackers are bound to be a step ahead of security experts and companies in most cases, the answer lies in seeking the help of newer technologies like machine learning that can automate the function of malware detection.

What does WannaCry do?
Also going by names such as WannaCrypt, WCrypt, WCRY, WannaDecrypt0r or WanaCrypt0r 2.0, ransomware WannaCry is designed to prevent access to a system until a sum of money is paid, usually in bitcoins. The malware is programmed to spread via SMB (Server Message Block), a protocol specific to Windows machines to communicate with file systems over a network.

WannaCry takes advantage of the machines that support this protocol but have not received the critical MS-17-010 security patch from Microsoft that was issued on 14 March.

Once the initial worm module is introduced to a system, according to Paladion Networks, it scans hosts on the local area network or LAN, while simultaneously scanning the Internet by generating random internet protocol (IP) addresses. “If connection to port 445 ( traditional Microsoft networking port) on that random IP address succeeds, the entire range is scanned, and if port 445 is found open, exploit attempts are made,” explained Sunil Gupta, president and chief operating officer of Paladion Networks.

While Microsoft released updates for the unsupported Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and patches for the Windows 8 operating systems to combat the attack, no incidents of Microsoft Windows 10 being affected have been reported till now.

Russia and India were hit, largely because many users, companies and government departments still use the unsupported Microsoft’s Windows XP. “It indeed is the biggest ransomware outbreak in history in terms of infections. But as of Saturday morning, the day after the outbreak, it had only made a measly $25,000, according to our researchers,” said Amit Nath, head of Asia Pacific-corporate business at F-Secure Corp.

Nature of the ransomware beast
As the name suggests, it is a type of malware that prevents or limits users from accessing their system, either by locking the system’s screen or by locking the users’ files unless a ransom is paid.

According to security experts from Trend Micro Inc., ransomware can be downloaded on to systems when unwitting users visit malicious or compromised websites. Some ransomware are known to be delivered as attachments from spammed email, downloaded from malicious pages through mal-advertisements, or dropped by exploit kits on vulnerable systems. Once executed in the system, ransomware can either lock the computer screen, or, in the case of crypto-ransomware, encrypt predetermined files...

Can machine learning come to the rescue?
The simplest method to detect malware, security experts will tell you, is by using the “Hashing” method which checks the existence of a hash (#) sign in a database. Of course, this is a very tedious exercise. The other method involves the use of signatures where security experts looks for specific strings in the file. But this, too, can easily be bypassed by malware authors. Behaviour-based malware detection examines what the program does when executed.

The question, then, is whether we can automate this process of malware detection with machine learning?

Machine learning, which enables systems to learn from data sets without having to be programmed specifically, would be the next best weapon in this cyber war, Trend Micro security experts believe. It can take advantage of existing data to determine patterns and use those patterns to adjust its own actions. It could, thus, provide the key to detecting ransomware attacks before they become too widespread, providing the opportunity for an organisation to react ahead of malicious file encryption.

Although ML and AI in healthcare and finance have garnered a tremendous amount of venture investment and press, other areas, such as marketing and business intelligence, have the potential to more quickly impact profitability, and are less fettered by regulation.

As of last year, there wasn't serious consensus or research into current and future AI marketing trends, so we decided to poll and interview over 50 ML and AI marketing executives. The goal: to determine the industries and applications with the most promise.

The full ML-in-marketing survey, conducted over three months, sheds light on various noteworthy trends and patterns; below, after defining some terms, I've highlighted three major findings.

A Quick Intro to 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'Machine-Learning'
"Artificial intelligence" is a broad term used roughly to describe any task performed by a computer that would normally require human intelligence. This umbrella term covers everything from chess-playing computer programs to Siri to spam filters.

"Machine-learning" is the science of getting computers to learn and improve their learning over time in autonomous fashion, by feeding them data and information in the form of observations and real-world interactions.

Most of the recent buzz about artificial intelligence is due to the incredible breakthroughs in machine-learning, roughly starting with the famous Image Net image recognition competition in 2012. That year, the University of Toronto's Geoff Hinton (now also employed at Google, for good reason) and his team outperformed all pre-programmed "machine vision systems" with a simple machine-learning approach that enabled a computer to recognize images nearly as well as human beings.

NVIDIA CEO: AI Workloads Will “Flood” Data Centers | Data Center Knowledge

During a keynote at his company’s big annual conference in Silicon Valley last week, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang took several hours to announce the chipmaker’s latest products and innovations, but also to drive home the inevitability of the force that is Artificial Intelligence.

NVIDIA is the top maker of GPUs used in computing systems for Machine Learning, currently the part of the AI field where most action is happening. GPUs work in tandem with CPUs, accelerating the processing necessary to both train machines to do certain tasks and to execute them.

Machine Learning is one of the most important computer revolutions ever,” Huang said. “The number of [research] papers in Deep Learning is just absolutely explosive.” (Deep Learning is a class of Machine Learning algorithms where innovation has skyrocketed in recent years.) “There’s no way to keep up. There is now 10 times as much investment in AI companies since 10 years ago. There’s no question we’re seeing explosive growth.”

While AI and Machine Learning are one of Gartner’s top 10 strategic technology trends for 2017, most other trends on the list – such as conversational systems, virtual and augmented reality, Internet of Things, and intelligent apps – are accelerating in large part because of advances in Machine Learning.

“Over the next 10 years, virtually every app, application and service will incorporate some level of AI,” Gartner fellow and VP David Cearley said in a statement. “This will form a long-term trend that will continually evolve and expand the application of AI and machine learning for apps and services.”

No Longer Just for Hyper-Scalers 
Growth in Machine Learning means a “flood” of AI workloads is headed for the world’s data center floors, Huang said. Up until now, the most impactful production applications of Deep Learning have been developed and deployed by a handful of hyper-scale cloud giants – such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Baidu – but NVIDIA sees the technology starting to proliferate beyond the massive cloud data centers.

Riminder uses deep learning to better match people to jobs | TechCrunch

On the stage of TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield, French startup Riminder made the case for how its deep learning-powered platform could augment recruiters — helping them better surface ideal contenders for job openings.

Riminder generates candidate rankings for open jobs by comparing applicant resumes against resumes from current employees and others in the world with similar job titles. Behind the curtain, Riminder uses a cocktail of computer vision and natural language processing to build profiles of what ideal resumes should look like for specific roles.

Once a resume is processed, recruiters can view its strengths and weaknesses. Riminder makes it easy to see this information visually and to identify market trends, like the most popular schools to recruit from or the most common skills applicants for a certain type of job typically have. The goal is to make sure recruiters have the information they need to judge candidates on both their ability to fit into company culture and their mastery of key skills.

When demonstrating Riminder’s value to a potential recruiting client, the team often runs tests on historical data. This data makes it easy to compare the platform’s automated short list with a human-generated list.

“When we compared results, recruiters found 3x more candidates they were interested in, they just weren’t using the right keywords,” explained Mouhidine Seiv, founder of Riminder.

What the Evolution of Learning Means for Conferences | Associations Now

Earlier this week, I spent a few days in Orlando at digitalNow2017. While speakers talked about everything from the internet of things to nondues revenue and content strategy, a topic that came up time and time again, including from both keynoters, was the evolution of learning.

For example, in Tuesday’s opening keynote, Timothy Chou, a futurist and chairman of Alchemist Accelerator, discussed how shifts in technology will require people to adapt a new learning lifecycle.

“It’s not about going to school and then working for 40 years. That’s not the pattern,” he said. “What this is going to have to look like is 10-year chunks—two to learn, eight to execute, and then starting all over again.”

In Wednesday’s keynote, Britt Andreatta—CEO and president of Andreatta Consulting—shared a similar perspective, saying that five years is the half-life of any learned skill.

To ensure that members are getting the ever-changing skills required to do their jobs and to enhance their potential, Andreatta said that organizations must move from a model of training to a model of learning.

Whereas training is a specific event or activity designed from an organization’s perspective, Andreatta said learning can happen anywhere, at any time, and is designed from the learner’s perspective.

“You don’t want to tell your learners what they need to know,” she said. “You want to create inquiry and curiosity, as well as allow for the hands-on application of the information they receive.”

Think liberal arts and innovation don’t go together? Think again at the Blended Learning in the Liberal Arts conference and JupyterDay Philly at Bryn Mawr College this month.

The Main Line women’s liberal arts college will host the conference on May 17 and May 18 for faculty and staff around the country to discuss education technology in the liberal arts, added with a JupyterDay Philly event to explore the open source online notebook software. The conference is sold out but JupyterDay, held on Friday, May 19, is still offering tickets ($10 to $35).

“Blended learning” encompasses research on how computer-based and in-class learning can be combined for the best learning outcomes. Kimberly Cassidy, then-provost of Bryn Mawr, helped apply for a Mellon Foundation grant to explore liberal arts perspectives in blended learning research, which up until then had mostly focused on learning environments in large research institutions.

“All liberal arts colleges asked: what would happen if we do the same thing in smaller classes?” said Jennifer Spohrer, manager of educational technology services at Bryn Mawr.

Now in its sixth year, Bryn Mawr’s annual Blended Learning conference will include open educational resources and innovative ways of assessing student learning.

Story Remix intelligently pulls from your collection of videos and images to create highlight videos of events on the fly, or you can start a new album of your own. So far, so blah—Google Photos already does that. But Story Remix shakes things up with powerful editing tools and integration with Microsoft’s Remix 3D service to add “mixed reality” digital images and animations to your projects.

It looks remarkably simple and surprisingly powerful. Clicking the Remix button next to an image or video creates an automatic highlight video, complete with a soundtrack provided by Microsoft’s Groove Music service. Don’t like the tunes? You can select from different music types and tempos—from Chill to Energetic—and the video will remix itself, changing the highlights to match the new beat.

That’s cool—and that flexibility extends to highlighting a particular person in your video. If you’re creating a video from imagery that includes several different people, Story Remix will identify them all and let you choose a “star.” Changing the star will also cause the video to remix itself on the fly. Nifty!If you’re not digging the videos Story Remix creates, you have a couple of different options. Simply clicking the Remix button again reorganizes the video with a new vibe, new pictures, and new music, or you can click an Edit Story button to take more manual control.

NIU Community School offers summer music lessons | DeKalb Daily Chronicle

Registration is underway for summer music classes offered by the Northern Illinois University Community School of the Arts. Music classes, ensembles, private lessons and workshops begin in June and run through the end of July. All classes and lessons are taught on the campus of NIU. Call the CSA office for more information or visit www.niu.edu/extprograms/csa/summer.shtml for summer 2017 programs and online registration. Register for the summer session by June 5.

NIU Percussion Workshop
Join world-class NIU percussion faculty, alumni and students for a five-day workshop exploring the world of percussion. Students perform in concert percussion ensembles, samba bands and steel drum ensembles, participate in classes on snare drum, drum set, timpani and keyboard percussion, attend faculty recitals, and more. This workshop meets from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with lunch, door prizes and T-shirts provided, and a final concert for parents and friends. Workshop dates are July 24 to 28.

Private Music Lessons
Private lessons are available on many musical instruments, including violin, piano and guitar, as well as banjo, steelpan, flute, saxophone, voice and more. CSA teachers include NIU students and faculty, as well as experienced community-based artists. Students and teachers meet weekly June 12 to July 31, at a time convenient to both. Community members of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in the six-week summer session, to brush up old skills or try a new instrument.

Music Classes for Young Children
Prelude Class (ages 1 to 3) is a group class with lots of fun for kids and parents. Class activities include music listening, creative movement, songs and lap games.

Development Class (ages 3 to 5) builds on the material learned in Prelude Class, adding musical patterns and skills through games, songs, creative movement, percussion instruments, basic music theory, and learning about some of the instruments of the orchestra. A parent must accompany the child to each class.

Both classes meet on six Saturdays beginning June 24 (no class on July 8). Prelude begins at 10 a.m. and Development begins at 10:35 a.m. Traditional and Suzuki violin instructor, music educator and Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra member Laurie Rodriguez teaches both classes.
