Schools Examine Content, Delivery of Online AP Courses by Michelle R. Davis
Education Week writes, "As the number of online Advanced Placement courses rises, more students are accessing those college-level classes than ever before. But teachers, students, and the governing body that authorizes such courses have had to adapt over time to determine how materials should be presented online and whether that method measures up to face-to-face instruction.
High schools that were once limited in the number of AP courses they could offer—whether from a lack of money, isolated locations, or student numbers too low to justify them—now have a plethora of online providers to choose from and free material to access. At the same time, course creators are learning new lessons about how to organize such information, and online-course requirements from the New York City-based College Board, which sponsors the AP program, are also evolving"

Third-, fifth-graders join in NASA videoconferences
Students at the Horizons-on-the-Hudson Elementary School recently participated in two live interactive videoconferences with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Joseph Catania, Horizons educational technology specialist, coordinated the distance learning event with NASA for Wanda Mejia-Jenkins' fifth-grade class and for Kelly Garcia's and Concetta Cracolici's third-grade classes.
Through distance learning technologies such as videoconferencing and webcasting, the NASA Digital Learning Network, or DLN, connects students and teachers with NASA experts and education specialists. Catania works closely with classroom teachers to plan and coordinate videoconferences that are related to the curriculum in the classroom.
Since 2007, Horizons-on-the-Hudson students have participated in more than 100 different interactive videoconferences with NASA, the National Holocaust Museum, the Smithsonian, international schools and schools across the country.

Eve Online: Commissioned Officer Edition review by Barry de la Rosa
A great opportunity to get into a unique game at an exciting time in its development; just beware the massive & unforgiving learning curve.
Eve Online is one of the longest-running games in the massively multiplayer online (MMO) genre. Started in 2003, the game takes place in a single, massive universe shared by up to 50,000 players at one time. It’s unique in that every skill takes time to learn, and only one can be learned at a time, so "older" players generally have an advantage. The Commissioned Officer Edition goes a long way to softening that disadvantage for new players.
The Commissioned Officer Edition is designed to encourage newcomers. Previously, you had to spend the first month of the game acquiring Learning skills that reduced the training time of future skills, but had no immediate practical benefit. The CO Edition gives you an immediate boost to replace these, so you can start acquiring practical skills from the outset. This should half the time it takes you to become a useful member of the Eve community, but still expect to put in a lot of work, and experience very little in-game interaction with others, for the first few weeks.
Eve Online is infamous for its steep learning curve - but there are player-run corporations, such as Eve University (www.eveuniversity.org), that take on new players and offer them a gentler, structured path. It's also worth pointing out that while Eve looks beautiful, it actually has very low system requirements and can even run on laptops with integrated graphics chips.

Find your Irish ancestors in new online collection by SHARON TATE MOODY
Those with Irish ancestors and relatives will be delighted to see that the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland is making photographic collections available through flickr, a free photo-sharing website.
Wedding and family portraits shot from 1900 to 1952 by Allison Photographic Studios of Armagh are now available.
Record office director Aileen McClintock called the images a "tremendous resource for [those] interested in local history, genealogy and even changing fashions in bridal wear."
The pictures were transferred from fragile glass plate negatives commonly used by photographers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries prior to the advent of photographic film.
Visit www.proni.gov.uk/pronionflickr to view the photographs.
The Irish record office also recently indexed and digitized wills dated 1858 through 1900 from three district probate registries of Armagh, Belfast, and Londerry. These records are available at no charge at http://tinyurl.com/2fj38y3.
