Interwrite Learning™ Announces Finalists in Student/Teacher Video Competition


Student/Teacher Video Competition Finalists Named
Fifteen finalists have been named in Interwrite Learning's first "Classroom Makeover" contest, a competition that will award winners in three grade categories technology makeovers for their classrooms, valued at abut $15,000 each.
The finalists were chosen from more than 220 entries from the United States, New Zealand, and Australia.


Interwrite Learning hope you will share the 15 finalists with your friends and colleagues, and vote for your favorite before November 9.

Questions regarding broadband policies have implications for schools

Is the United States stuck in the internet's slow lane?

It's a question lawmakers are beginning to ask--and the answer could have significant implications for education: Most schools have high-speed networks and fast internet connections, but their ability to stream video or large files to students’ homes, for example, depends on the connection speeds of those households...
In a move to get a clearer picture of where the U.S. stands, the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Oct. 30 approved legislation that would develop an annual inventory of existing broadband services--including the types, advertised speeds, and actual number of subscribers--available to households and businesses across the nation.
The bill, introduced by Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., is intended to provide policy makers with improved data so they can better use grants and subsidies to target areas lacking high-speed internet access. Markey said in a statement last week that promoting broadband internet access would help spur job growth, access to health care, and education and would promote innovation, among other benefits.

The Online Learner: Characteristics and Pedagogical Implications

Abstract
Globalization has stretched the scope of the online learner population from a homogeneous profile of mostly adult, mostly employed, place-bound, goal-oriented, and intrinsically motivated to one that is heterogeneous, younger, dynamic, and responsive to rapid technological innovations. This paper describes the emerging characteristics of the online learner and ensuing pedagogical implications and suggests that exploratory and dialogical online learning pedagogical models are most effective for supporting and promoting these characteristics.
