Via email, she urged them to log off and go to bed, but when she checked later, the eager students were still answering math questions and scoring points in the game-like program.
Since May 10, five classes of fourth grade students at the elementary school in Judson Independent School District have been test-driving the program for free.
The Reasoning Mind program — developed by a Houston-based nonprofit of the same name — is a supplementary online math curriculum for second through fourth grades and a full curriculum for fifth and sixth grades.
Students are guided online by a friendly animated “Genie” character and can work at their own pace. Students track how many problems they've solved and accrue points to buy furniture, pets and other items for “My Place,” their virtual home. All the while, the program's artificial intelligence tracks each keystroke and determines an appropriate level of difficulty for the student.
By downloading student data from the program, teachers can monitor their progress and quickly analyze and address each student's skills.
