the Net Generation

In an earlier post, I mentioned Coaching and Mentoring on the Internet Highway by Kathleen Roney and MaryAnn Davies, appears in Volume 3, Issue 5, June/July 2007 edition of Innovate.

Check out the rest of this interesting line-up in this Innovate issue.

This issue opens with two features that explore the characteristics, needs, and expectations of current students in higher education, followed by three features that illustrate specific examples of innovative practice. Our issue then concludes with two features that provide models of faculty development and technology-enhanced teacher education.

The Academic's Handbook by Leigh DeNeef and Craufurd D. Goodwin

Almost 20 years after the first edition came out, a new version released — the third — with many chapters on faculty careers updated and some completely new topics added.
This new, revised, and expanded edition of the popular Academic’s Handbook is an essential guide for those planning or beginning an academic career.

Topics covered include teaching, research, tenure, academic freedom, mentoring, diversity, harassment and more. The editors of the collection (who also wrote some of the pieces) are two Duke University professors who also served as administrators there. They are A. Leigh Deneef, a professor of English and former associate dean of the Graduate School, and Craufurd D. Goodwin, a professor of economics who was previously vice provost and dean of the Graduate School.

June/July 2007 edition of Innovate

Just to let you know that this article, by Kathleen Roney and MaryAnn Davies, appears in Volume 3, Issue 5, June/July 2007 edition of Innovate.

They describe how a teacher education program employed TaskStream, a Web-based communications tool, to give professional guidance and support to their teacher interns. By promoting standards-based instruction, fostering reflective practice and focused mentoring, and facilitating the development of electronic portfolios to map out professional growth, TaskStream helped interns bridge the gap between their training and their classroom practice. Although Davies and Roney note that further challenges remain for the future use of the tool, their account nevertheless offers a valuable model of how online technology can enhance teacher education programs.
