In Universities we are busy dealing with the impact of elearning tools and pedagogies on our students and our staff and our knowledge domains. We know that elearning can create opportunities; we worry that it also creates barriers. But who benefits and who is disadvantaged is not yet clear.

Gill Kirkup is presently Deputy Director of IET with responsibility for managing all IET’s taught course programmes. She oversees resource management and curriculum development. The largest programme: the MA in Online and Distance Education is a globally delivered online programme.In a long career with the Open University Gill has been involved in all aspects of its teaching activity: including course design, authoring materials, tutoring online, at a distance and at residential schools. She has worked on a variety of courses at undergraduate and post graduate level. A recent course that she worked on (Science, Engineering and Technology: A Course for Women Returners) received an Open University teaching award for its innovatory aspects.
Gill is regularly involved with institutional research on media use in Open University courses.Gill is a registered practitioner of the UK Higher Education Academy.
