Five tips for being a successful online student

A growing number of students are attending college classes online instead of going to a bricks-and-mortar campus.
A U.S. Department of Education study entitled
Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning  found that online learning can even result in better performance than traditional settings.

But what does it take to succeed in a virtual classroom, where teachers and students are connected by technology?

"Online learning can be more convenient, effective and rewarding than traditional classes, but convenience doesn't mean it's easier," says Gwen Hillesheim, interim chief academic officer and provost of Colorado Technical University, a leading provider of education for career-motivated students. "Successful online students need to be proactive in their studies and take responsibility for their own learning. It takes self discipline and time management to do your best. But when the student is engaged, the learning can be significant and the experience fulfilling."

If you're an online student or considering taking virtual classes, here are five tips to help you succeed in a distance learning environment:

Important Tips to Help Students Choose the Best Online Degree Programs by Brian Jenkins

Today I have Brian Jenkins guest blogging. Please be sure to check out his unique guest post. Guest posts are always welcome, please contact me.

You've chosen a career, or at least a general career area, and have decided to take an online program. But which particular online education program should you take? Your program selection could have a significant impact on getting the job you desire.

Here are some tips and some questions to ask when choosing an appropriate online education program:
  • Curriculum: Depending on the major, a career-focused program may be appropriate. Some education programs focus on theory and don't include a sufficient amount of specialized education on different careers. Can students specialize in their area of interest? When applicable, does the school help online students make arrangements to receive hands-on training at an appropriate setting?
  • Instructors: Students should inquire about the instructors academic credentials and their real world experience. Do some of the program's instructors have national reputations? Do instructors who teach the on-campus programs teach the online programs as well? How many virtual office hours do they provide each week?
  • Internships: Some online programs provide internships or help you find one. Internships provide valuable experience and networking opportunities. Also, some employers hire interns who perform well. If internships are common for on-campus versions of the program, find out if any online schools offer them.
  • Alumni: Ask a school representative what percentage of graduates from your specific program obtained a job in their field of study. Compare the hiring rates of your prospective online education programs. A school representative should be able to provide the information.
  • Accreditation: Look for schools which are accredited by a recognized accrediting agency. Accreditation adds assurance that it's a quality program. Also, numerous professional associations provide accreditation or provide their approval to specific programs.
  • Program ranking: Completing a nationally ranked program can be beneficial when searching for a job. Education program rankings are available on the Internet and in magazines. Also, schools that have strong name recognition are worthy of your attention since name recognition is an influencing factor with many employers.
  • Completion rate and certification: Students should ask for the programs completion rate. A high drop out rate may indicate the online program has been poorly designed. If the school won't provide this information students may want to find another online program. If the occupation requires certification or if certification enhances the prospects of getting a job, inquire about the success rate of program graduates at passing the applicable certification exams.
  • Program delivery method: In asynchronous programs students interact with instructors and other students by posting at their convenience. These programs provide a lot of flexibility. In synchronous programs students and instructors interact at specific times. Individuals with busy schedules may prefer an asynchronous online program. However, students in synchronous programs typically feel they're part of a learning community. Synchronous programs provide quick feedback on ideas and provide motivation for students to keep up with their peers.
  • Self-paced versus scheduled: Some online programs are self-paced which allows students to complete courses at their convenience. Scheduled online programs have a specific timeline with scheduled exams, assignments and completion dates.
  • Employers' preference: For some occupations, it's not obvious which is the best particular education program. There may be several types of education programs that qualify graduates for the job they want, or there may be one particular type of program which the majority of employers prefer. Ask potential employers for their preferences before choosing a program.

E-Learning and career moves - How to manage your career with online qualifications

Today I have Gizmo an Australian company as guest blogger. Please be sure to check out this unique guest post. Guest posts are always welcome, please contact me.

There’s one inescapable fact about the New Economy – the more qualifications you have, and the easier they are to get, the simpler career moves can be. Most people at some time or other find that they need certifications, quick courses or even just a basic knowledge of career related skills. A course in computer repairs, for example, can be a personal asset, a portable skill, and just plain useful.

Online qualifications
The biggest education boom in human history is now underway. Online access to education qualifications is generating an unprecedented explosion around the world and a huge demand for skills training. Anybody, of any age, in any career or profession, can obtain skills at any level easily.

Online qualifications are definitely a major asset in the employment market at the moment. Interestingly, this phenomenon is also meeting a rising demand for skills, particularly in businesses which have taken up multitasking.

Online qualifications also provide a way of making up gaps in education and filling out skill sets which would otherwise be inadequate when applying for some jobs. It's quite easy to get online qualifications if you understand how they operate and know how to get the information you need.

Finding what you need in online qualifications
There are literally thousands of colleges, all offering varying levels of qualification. Some colleges offer a community college level qualifications, others offer degrees, others offer vocational training. Of course, just to complicate things further, they’re all under the same basic search headings.

Fortunately for consumers, there's a way round this situation. The best way to find the course you need is to set a qualification objective, and work your way backwards finding out the pre-requisite qualifications to achieve this objective.

The advantage of this method is that you will find the colleges offering qualifications you want simply by following the trail of qualifications. When you find a college offering your objective level of qualification, get in direct contact with the college and ask about pre-requisite requirements. The colleges can give you a map of everything you need and most importantly they can also give you some useful advice about how to get these qualifications.

Career moves and qualifications
When looking at a career move, look at the specific qualification requirements of positions related to your career move. You'll find a series of career tracks which will also help clarify how to get to your career objective. There may be preliminary career moves involved, and there may be also other qualifications and levels of experience like internships, which must be taken into account in your career move planning.

It is also possible to find a large number of very useful short courses, skills training and even advanced courses online, like computer support and other valuable all-round skills. These courses can be done in relatively short periods of time, and are often very valuable competitive edges when going for jobs.

Important: When looking at online courses always make sure that these courses are properly accredited by education authorities. Only accredited courses are effective professional qualifications.

K-12 Students View Mobile Devices as Critical to Learning Process, Survey Shows

The report, Learning in the 21st Century: Taking it Mobile! shows that students now view the inability to use their own devices in school, such as cell phones, smartphones, MP3 players, laptops or net books, as the primary barrier to a successful digital education.

The report also reveals a shift in thinking by parents and educators who are now beginning to accept the role of mobile devices as instructional tools, in part because they are active users of mobile devices in their own personal lives. In some cases, educators have embraced mobile devices as a catalyst for making learning a more student directed experience. At Jamestown Elementary School in Virginia, for example, students use mobile devices to create multimedia projects, improve their writing skills and collaborate with their peers. High school students in Onslow County Schools in North Carolina use smartphones to learn algebra, geometry and calculus.

This report examines the Speak Up responses from a new cohort of education innovators that we are identifying as Mobile Learning Explorers, as well as students. Interviews with six Mobile Learning Explorer educators and one student representing five different school districts and one private school help verify the survey results and provide additional context for the data findings. Key findings include:

  • Access to smartphones has more than tripled among high school students since 2006. Furthermore, students no longer view their school’s Internet filters as a primary barrier to using technology at school; but rather, the primary barrier is the inability to use their own devices, such as cell phones, smartphones, MP3 players, laptops or net books.
  • 62 percent of responding parents report that if their child’s school allowed devices to be used for educational purposes, they would likely purchase a mobile device for their child.
  • The use of mobile learning devices for productivity, organization, collaboration and learning is highly personal and extremely customizable. Unlike typical innovations, mobile learning implementations require greater flexibility and often times are directed by the students’ or parents’ preferences. For the first time, educators have an opportunity to help students learn more effectively and deeply by leveraging students’ preferred learning tools and strategies.
  • Administrators agree that the top barriers for implementing mobile devices in their schools and districts are the need for focused professional development for teachers and current policies related to network security,
