6 Cool Apps for College Students by Lauren Bailey

Today I have Lauren Bailey as guest blogger. Please be sure to check out her unique guest post. Guest posts are always welcome, please contact me.

Most college courses now have at least some aspects of the course available online. Students frequently communicate with professors, check their grades, receive and submit assignments and work with other students online. Most students now also juggle their social activities, shopping, and most other aspects of life through online media. For students heading to college for the first time or closing out their degree programs, these apps will help you work online more efficiently, save money, and organize your life.

1. Cliqset
Cliqset is the app that all young people have been waiting for. Enter all your social networks or news feeds and Cliqset combines them all into one stream. Rather than clicking around from one site to another, students can quickly follow tweets, get message notifications and view updates all from the same source. This can help students save time and cut back on distractions.
Available here for iPhone.

2. Pulse
Download Pulse and you will automatically be able to see your favorite websites displayed on the same screen in a mosaic of images. This allows you to keep up with current news and stay abreast of new trends all within one browser.
Available here.

3. Kindle
The cost of textbooks is through the roof, and students lucky enough to have a Kindle can save tons of money by buying their textbooks in a digital format. Kindle has over 6,000 textbooks available, and they are viewable on any computer, mobile phones, and tablets. Buying from Kindle will save you an average of $60 per book.
Get it here.

4. Exam Support
Students can use this app to relax and relieve stress during study times or before tests. The app will take you through a guided audio meditation formulated to reduce anxiety. Try it before you leave to take a final or during a study break.
Download the app here.

5. Evernote
This app is one of the best for taking notes on your phone. It is both mobile and web friendly, and students can add audio, photos, and tags to the notes they keep. This allows friends to view your notes by searching tags. It's available for iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Palm Pre.
Download the app here.

6. My Homework
Because no one really has room for a planner anymore when all the information we need is online, finding a great planning app is essential to organizing your assignments. My Homework is great because it allows you to color code all the things you need to do and sort them according to date. It will notify you when you have an assignment coming up or when something is late.
Available for iPhone.

The 20 Best Books of 2011 You Should Read Over Winter Break

Florine Church has been in touch to remind us about this article below.

Bibliophiles, along with pretty much everyone else (except for maybe super harried parents), rejoice once school lets out for the winter holidays. No longer crunched beneath the stress of finals, projects, professors, extracurriculars, and other hallmarks of college-dom, they may now decompress with the simple, satisfying companionship of a hot drink and even hotter new read.

Textbooks give way to something far more voluntary, and the break provides an excellent opportunity to catch up on everything assigned reading precluded. This year saw the publication (or English-language publication) of some truly fantastic fiction and nonfiction works, a few of which may very well enter the realm of the classics in due time. One could certainly do worse when picking out something to snuggle with next to the fire…

1. Swamplandia! by Karen Russell

Lovers of the magic realism style might want to spend their winters in Florida's sweltering Everglades, following the noble journey of a teen girl hoping to pull her beloved family from ruin. Their gator park livelihood stands threatened when the matriarch, as its main draw, winds up severely sick and sets off a chain reaction of total uncoolness.

Five Things Students Want Their Teachers to Know about Online Learning

Photo: Tech & Learning
Kids love having the opportunity to learn online but it’s not merely the medium or the technology that students enjoy. At the recent iNacol Virtual Schools Symposium I listened to high school students who have experience learning this way as well as teachers who have experience with these students, share some advice for making this type of learning even better.

Here is their advice, as well as suggestions for tools that teachers can use to heed this advice.

Advice for Online Learning Educators

1. Socialization is important!
Teenagers value the ability to socialize and they don’t want to lose that online. Provide opportunities for students to meet, get to know each other, work together, and connect deeply in your online classes. Teens want you to make it fun for them. While they certainly enjoy the benefits of working independently, they appreciate opportunities to work in pairs, groups, and with other class members. Help foster this by creating projects and online spaces for them to work this way.

Tools:
  • Skype or Google Video: Great for projects where students work in pairs.
  • Google+ Hangout: Works well for students meeting and working in groups.
  • Facebook Page: Wonderful for whole class discussion and interaction in a space where other experts and students can participate.
  • Fieldtrips: Give students opportunties to learn together in the world.

L&D needs clarity in how it communicates: Inside Learning Technologies and Skills December issue

Donald Taylor used his editor’s column in the December issue of Inside Learning Technologies & Skills to call for the L&D profession to get better at presenting itself and at describing to others the value that L&D offers.

In his editor’s comments, Donald Taylor feels that for L&D to be better understood, L&D professionals need to get smarter at how they talk about what they do: “When asked ‘what do you do?’ we often describe what we do in our daily lives - design elearning, manage the LMS, teach leadership, and from there it’s just a short step to 'oh, so you’re in training!'”

Published in digital format, the December issue of Inside Learning Technologies & Skills is now available on the Learning Technologies and Learning and Skills event web sites and contains in-depth articles from leading contributors on the latest trends and developments as well as covering all the major issues affecting organisational learning.

December’s issue includes articles on a new way to distribute content; the next generation of e-learning; creating leaders for the 21st Century; and why L&D should get good at gaming.

Start the New Year by learning about how to use social media in the newsroom

Social media has become a crucial element in the journalist’s daily work today. Do you know how to set up an account? How do you maximize your time when using social media? How can you engage with the community through social media channels?

Photo: Robert Quigley
Robert Quigley can help journalists answer these questions and more with his upcoming distance learning course, Social Media for Journalists which is being offered for a second time in English by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas.

Journalists can start the new year by applying for an online course with the Knight Center on “Social Media for Journalists” that will run from Jan. 16 to Feb. 12. Applications are being accepted now until Jan. 5. Journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean can apply here.

The course will be conducted entirely online and is divided into weekly modules containing video and text lectures, links to online resources and will feature class exercises, quizzes and discussions. Students will be able to study at their own pace but will be expected to complete assignments on deadline. The course is intensive and requires about 10-15 hours of dedication a week.

Photo: Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas

Students will learn the basics and history of social media in six parts:
  1. They will learn to use social media tools effectively and how to measure results
  2. Learn about social networking tools like Twitter and FB.
  3. Learn how to use social media appropriately depending on the news story/circumstances
  4. Learn live tweeting techniques
  5. Learn how to display, aggregate and search for social content
  6. Learn how to measure success and learn about ethics in a social media world
