University of the People in Arabic to Launch: A University By Refugees, For Refugees | University of the People

Shai Reshef, University of the People (UoPeople) writes, Last Saturday, April 6th at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Jordan, I had the enormous privilege to announce the University’s largest undertaking to date: UoPeople in Arabic, a University by refugees, for refugees.

University of the People announces new initiative to offer tuition-free online education for Arabic-speaking refugees who lack access to higher education.

UNHCR counts 18 million persons of concern in the MENA region, which includes refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and asylum seekers. To date, University of the People has enrolled over 1,000 refugees, 600 of whom are Syrian—more than any other university in the world. Yet these numbers represent but a fraction of the refugees and other Middle Eastern students knocking at our door, who cannot study in any language other than Arabic.

In response to this obvious need, the University is launching UoPeople in Arabic, an ambitious solution to this unique challenge. UoPeople in Arabic will open the doors to refugees from Syria, Iraq, Libya, and Yemen, but will also be open to the entire Arabic-speaking community...

After approval by the DEAC, our accrediting agency, the University will offer a two-year associate degree in Business Administration in Arabic. While studying in Arabic, students will also master the English language, enabling them to continue their studies with the UoPeople global community of students in English...

Finally Shai Reshef said, After all, to give refugees a better future is to give the world a better future.

Good luck with that new initiative, Shai!
