140-year-old math book contains surreal remnants of old Indonesia | Culture - Mashable SE Asia

In a collection of photos, accompanied by a detailed description of his findings, Khir Johari gives us a peek into what life was like back in Dutch-ruled Indonesia, all portrayed in a series of elementary-level math questions by Danial Martinus

Titled '', meaning 'Some Counting Problems' in English, the book is written in an antiquated Dutch-style Indonesian, incorporating the use of many Dutch-specific letters like 'oe' and 'j', the latter pronounced like the letter 'y'.

"No, it is not about numbers. This book tells us more about the everyday man, the everyday life of people at a different point in time. It gives us an all-round view of the society, culture, and people," Johari says in his Facebook post.
