Local math teacher recognized by White House

"Not everyone can say they had a teacher that was recognized by the White House itself. That is not the case for former students of Melissa Colonis’ math class." continues

Colonis, now a calculus and algebra teacher at Jefferson High School, was recognized for her work at Tecumseh Junior High School where she taught seventh-grade math. She was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, and News 18 This Morning spoke to her about the accomplishment.

Two teachers were chosen from each state, and Colonis said she learned of her big win at the beginning of July while on a college tour with her son and husband.

When we asked her why she taught, Colonis said she thinks that’s what she was meant to do.
