Jennifer Cannon, "Childhood obesity rates continue to climb and Indiana is the 22nd most obese state with a 31.5 perent obesity rate for children."
The Purdue Extension Offices of Clay, Monroe, Owen and Putnam counties
are providing a one-day training of I am Moving, I am Learning at no
cost to childcare providers in centers, homes, ministries and anyone who
is interested in attending. The event will take place June 30 at the
Clay County YMCA from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
I am Moving, I am Learning (IMIL) is a proactive approach that is
scientifically based and provides developmentally appropriate practices
for physical activity, music and movement, and nutrition during early
childhood.
The three goals of IMIL are to:
* Increase the quantity of time children routinely spend in moderate to
vigorous physical activities (MVPA) to meet national guidelines for
physical activity.
* Improve the quality of structured movement experiences intentionally facilitated by teachers and adults.
* Improve healthy nutrition choices for children every day.
The following sessions will be offered:
MVPA Every Day -- Do the children in your care get at least 60 minutes
of structured MVPA (moderate to vigorous physical activity) every day?
Participants will experience MVPA activities that can be replicated with
pre-school children.
